I've always been drawn to textiles.
Knitting, weaving, sewing, embroidery - I've tried it all! Me and my best friend were going to her hometown in the Midlands and we had a long train journey so when she offered to teach me how to crochet, I assumed it would come naturally.
How hard could crochet be?
Turns out extremely hard.
At least for me.
I was soooo frustrated that I couldn't immediately understand what I was meant to be doing. I could knit! How was I not able to crochet. I made mistakes, I undid my work, I got frustrated at my friend. She gave up on me. I gave up on me.
Okay that sounds very dramatic but we did end the journey basically not talking because we need a little space from each other, and crochet.
Luckily for me, maybe not her, we had a weekend in the countryside with not much else to do but try help Tiana learn how to crochet. She was SO patient with (thank you, I love you).
That was nine years ago. And somehow crochet went from being a craft I was convinced just wasn't for me, to becoming the skill that I based my whole working life around.
Now, I'm a crochet artist, designer and teach creating everything from colourful crochet bags and accessories and the most unique clothes you could never buy on the high street. I teach beginner friendly crochet classes and sell patterns and tutorials for my designs.
I've probably taught thousands of people to crochet and I honestly think the reason I'm a good teacher, is because I truly understand the struggle that can come with learning. Every mistake I see beginners doing, is one that I overcame.
So if you're looking for some hope that one day you can learn to crochet (or learn any new skill) I'm here to tell you that with the right teacher and a lot of patience, you can do this!
